Want to Volunteer?

radio 1190So you want to help out at Radio 1190? That's great! Volunteers are the foundation of Radio 1190 and we couldn’t operate without them! All of our DJs are volunteers and our street team is made up of the station’s finest.

Important contact info:
Our volunteer coordinator is Jessi Whitten. She can be reached by e-mail at jessi@radio1190.org or by phone at 303-492-5031.

But what does a volunteer do?

Being a Radio 1190 volunteer is your chance to experience the world of radio and music. The experience you will gain at 1190 is self-directed. Many volunteers only volunteer a few hours a month, while others volunteer daily. Your experience with 1190 depends on the effort you put in. Managers are always here to answer your questions or to discuss volunteer opportunities with you.

All new volunteers must do a minimum of 10 hours of volunteer work at the station before being eligible to move up to other parts of the station. Volunteer opportunities range from working with the news or sports departments, flyering/stickering with other volunteers, working with production, promoting 1190 at shows/events, working in the 1190 offices, working phones during our semi-annual pledge drives, and many other needed jobs at the station. There is a volunteer signup book on the old radio in the front office. You can also contact the volunteer coordinator, through e-mail or during her office hours for new opportunities.

How Do You Become a DJ?

To be an 1190 DJ you must first complete 10 hours of volunteer work. After you finish your volunteer hours, you can have the volunteer coordinator sign off for your hours and she will set up a training for you. Since the number of trainings are limited, volunteers with the most hours will be trained first (in other words, do as many volunteer hours as you can to get into the first training session).

Once you are trained to be a DJ, you will be placed on the Radio 1190 sublist, which means you can sub in for any rotation or specialty show DJ. The following semester, you are eligible to apply for a weekly rotation show (which is any two/three hour shifts that runs 10 am to 9 pm weekdays).

After one semester of a rotation show, you can apply for a specialty show. As a college radio station, 1190 AM has Djs graduate or change schedules every semester, so opportunities to become a DJ are here. However, the more commitment you show to the station, you’ll have more of a chance to have a DJ slot.

What About Street Team?

The street team is Radio 1190’s face in the Boulder and Denver communities. They are the volunteers who DJ mobile events, do promotions at concerts, and guerilla marketing campaigns for the station. Volunteers on the street team must apply and commit at least one semester on the team. The benefits include mobile event DJing, guest list passes to shows and concerts, Radio 1190 promo stuff (stickers, flyers, etc.), and a lot of fun. Applications are put out each semester.
